First of all, let me clarify why Julie and Rachel were getting such a kick out of my 5K-by-the-time-I-was-40 goal, so that I don't make them sound like bad friends!
Rachel and Julie are both runners. Julie is a huge runner...marathons and everything! Rachel is also a runner...1/2 marathons and such. I am a fairly athletic person (not that I'm good at much), but I do love participating.
To make a long story short, they were pretty sure that I could run a 5K by the end of the summer...not by 10 years from now like I was planning!
Anyway, so back to running stories! I have some running stories that I'll be sharing over the next week or so regarding my training. I wanted to share them while I was training, but I was trying to make my 5K a surprise for Julie and Rae....and Rachel is an avid reader and Julie is a frequent reader/occasional commenter.

i.am.a.runner
I am a runner. I didn't used to be a runner.
After watching the Boston Marathon, I was inspired. If they can run 26 miles, I can surely run 3.1 miles.
I had told Julie and Rachel that I had a goal to run a 5K by the time I was 40. They laughed at me...so did Josh! Hey, I'm busy people!!!
So, being the up-for-the-challenge girl that I am, I started a running program:
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
It's the "Couch to 5K" running plan. It's for people just like me that want to run, but are overwhelmed by the idea. I've never liked running.
So, I started about 8 weeks ago, and I ran in my first 5K last Saturday!!! It was so exciting.
I decided that I would be thrilled just to run the entire time, and I would be extremely pleased with a time of 31:00.
At mile #1, a guy was calling out times....9:27. "I think I'm running too fast!" However, I felt good, so I just decided that I would keep my pace and slow down later if I thought I needed to.
I passed 23 people (2 of them being guys) which I thought was incredible...I had a goal of 5! As I was approaching the finish line, I heard them calling out times over the PA system....29:32...29:35...
"Oh my goodness!" I thought, "I can make it in under 30:00 if I kick it up!!"
So, I put on my speedy legs and sprinted to the finish....29:49.
And there at the finish line was my supportive husband and adorable daughters cheering me on. I almost cried....surprise, surprise.
It was fantastic. I placed 100 out of 190.
I'd like to thank Julie and Rachel for chuckling at my goal and making me want to achieve my goal much sooner! I'd like to thank Josh for supporting me through my training, pushing me out the door, and bringing everyone to the finish line...it meant a lot to have all of you there. Thank you to the girl in the pink tank top...you were the first person that I passed. Lady in the purple shorts....I will pass you next year.

FINALLY....Claire's birthday party:

Amelia wouldn't sit still for a picture to save her life (what's new?)...

A little of this...

Cuddling with the cats...

Claire asked for a lake cake that had her and Fletcher (Grandma and Grandpa Popsicle's new dog) on it. Hmmmmm. So, Aunt Jill and Uncle Andrew had a picture of Fletcher on their phone and they emailed it to us.
Josh printed a picture of Claire and a picture of Fletcher, stuck them together, and put them in the boat. Great job, Honey! A few goldfish crackers, a little blue frosting, some crushed graham crackers, and well....we had a cake.
Sticking with the boat theme...Claire received a life jacket for her birthday:

I've been browsing through old pictures, and I found this one of Claire and I taken on vacation in 2004. We were touring an old mining area...hence the rain jackets and hard hats.
Josh and I can't believe how much Amelia looks like Claire in this picture! Josh said that if I would have sent this to him as a picture of Amelia, he wouldn't have questioned it at all!

We were just outside admiring our mini rose bush.
Claire says, "What are these pokey things?"
I said, "Well, you know, every rose has its thorn. Every night has its dawn. And every cowboy sings a sad, sad song. Every rose has its thorn."
She asks (very intriguingly), "Every cowboy sings a sad song?"
Supposedly.

cloth.diapers
I have never used a cloth diaper. But if I had to start from square one with child #1, I probably would.
Last week on Simple Mom, they did a big review of cloth diapers and the pros and cons. They gave a ton of info about everything that had to do with cloth diapers.
The biggest thing that stuck out to me was this:
investment in the cloth diapers (the most expensive and most user-friendly/convenient kind)=about $400. You can reuse these for all of your kiddos.
investment in disposable diapers for 3 kids=about $4,500. (And we'll surely try to make it to #4 at some point.)
Yikes. My children just pooped all over $4,000 that they wouldn't have had to. Oh, that kind of makes me ill.
Supposedly, a lot of people use a combo of cloth and disposable because (let's face it) disposables are simple to use. My friend, Erin, is the only person that I know that uses cloth.
Any thoughts moms? Erin...if you read this, feel free to share or post about your experiences on your blog...I'll link you!
Josh says "definitely not" to the cloth, but I think if this was baby #1 and I showed him the numbers, he'd think about it a bit more seriously. If any of you have thought about it at all, you should at least read up on it over at Simple Mom. I learned a lot just reading through the 5 articles on it!

I can't believe that I'm only 30 and my memory of my younger days is slipping away already! We were up at the lake today, and Jill, Mom and I were discussing the whole answering machine thing.
Jill and I started doing our rendition of it when she continued on where I stopped! What? There was more? I completely forgot.
...there wasn't much more, but it wouldn't be right not to post it. Last round...
"This is Jac and Jill and we're here to say,
Leave a message on our machine today.
We're not able to come to the phone;
leave your name and number after the tone.
We'll call you back when we get home.
So leave your name and number after the tone."
...we obviously didn't want them to forget their name and number. Pre-caller ID days, you know.

Ok, so back to the answering machine...
So, then I was thinking about our answering machine message when we were growing up. Do you remember, Jill? Mom?
Really, how could you forget?
Jill and I saved our money for a very long time to purchase our very own keyboard. It was a lot of money when we were 10 or 12 or however old we were at the time. I think it was $50 or $60 or something.
Anyway, so there were some auto music buttons on it that would play a "boxed beat" of some sort. There were all kinds to choose from, and you could speed up the pace or slow it down.
So, being the "rad" girls that we were in 1990 (almost 20 years ago....where does the time go?), we chose the rap-like beat and made up our own answering machine message. Are you ready for this?
(each of us alternating lines...singing/rapping/whatever)

Classic. Pure classic.
...and slightly embarrassing when you're 30.

Let's take a break from talking about sickness.
I was lying in bed this morning thinking about answering machines (because we don't have one). It's a little weird, I know.
We used to have one that Josh probably had when he was in college. It was awful. So, in the middle of the move, it kind of came up missing. (In other words, I threw it away thinking we would get another one.)
Well, we moved 15 months ago, and we still don't have one.
This isn't all that bad because my thought process has been, "You know, if we don't have an answering machine, we don't ever have calls to return when we get home." It's actually been kind of nice to not return calls.
I'm sure people on the other line are like, "Seriously? No answering machine? Are you living in 1975?"
My logic is that we have cell phones (of course) and anyone who NEEDS to get a hold of us will be able to.
So...back to my point....it takes me awhile sometimes, I know.
I was thinking (again) that we should get one. And...what should our message sound like? I was thinking about the one we had at the other house, the one my parents have, my other family members', etc.
uh oh...everyone just woke up. To be continued....I can tell that everyone is on the edge of their seats with this one.

Three girls.
Three fevers.
Three surprisingly fairly-pleasant children.
Claire took a dose of motrin at 2:45, and at 4:30 her temp was 104.5. The doctor is switching her antibiotic since the one she's on isn't seeming to be working like it's supposed to.
Amelia took an extremely long nap this afternoon (yay!) and hasn't thrown up all day (yay!), but now she's got it coming out of her bottom (boo.).
Meredith is sitting at 102.1 and she'll be starting some meds if she goes any higher.
Yes, we're running a small hospital at our house.
Is it June? Because I'm pretty darn sure that wedding season is upon us as well. Timing could have been a little better, but it's not as bad as it could have been. Next week would have been worse! Thank you, Lord for this week and not next. Amen.

Well, Claire is up and down like she's been. She's had a couple of spiked temps since she's been home, but nothing that hasn't been cured with a little motrin.
Amelia, on the other hand, woke up this morning covered in puke! She had thrown up all over her bed (which had oozed out onto the carpet...t.m.i., I know). Ugh.
I guess when it rains, it pours.

Josh just called and said that Claire gets to come home!
Her temp spiked up again last night, but I guess it's just something that we'll need to keep under control while she's home. This does not bother me at all since I felt like we were just beginning to take up space at the hospital.
Her temps keep spiking, but I am completely able to give her the meds she needs and take her temp at home! And we would all rather be at home than at the hospital.
And, as funny as it is, I'm excited to have her home so that she can watch our digital PBS kids chanel at home. They don't have our local digital channels at the hospital (just the main channels), and I'm not a big fan of the cartoons on Cartoon Network and Nikelodeon (I don't even know if I spelled that right). I never thought I would be thankful for our budget-friendly televison stations!
So, yay for the good news!

Well, I'm at home, and Josh is at the hospital. Claire slept most of the late afternoon/early evening and woke up as sweaty as could be. She was drenched....and pleasant (really). :)
I'm guessing that her antibiotic is going to have to start taking over these fever spells pretty quickly. She's been on it for over 24 hours at this point. Hopefully she will have had (or will soon have) her last round with it.
I'm going to be praying for no more fevers and a good report from the doctor in the a.m. Maybe they'll be able to come home by lunch.

7:16 p.m.
Claire's temperature went up again.
Thankfully, she took her medicine extremely well.
We found out that we have to stay another night. I'm a bit bummed about this, but Josh is going to take the day off tomorrow and stay with her. I'm going a little bit stir crazy...and I need a shower. :)

2:41 p.m.
The fever broke about an hour and a half ago. They unhooked her i.v. since her face was starting to poof up because of all of the fluids she was getting.
She was excited about this until they wanted to take the i.v. out of her arm. The way she was screaming and fighting, I couldn't tell if they were removing the i.v. or her fingernails.
She's pretty perky right now as she's eating her applesauce and drinking a milkshake....being sick isn't ALL bad, you know.

12:13 p.m.
temperature 104.8
With high temperatures comes the taking of medicine, which is always a treat. :) Claire gets extremely cranky when she has to take the medicine. Like I said before, it's borderline comical.
So, in the midst of the medicine debate, the nurse walks in with the two syringes of medicine that she needs to drink. Each syringe has a small cap on the top. The nurse takes one cap off and hands the syringe to me. She takes the other cap off (without Claire seeing her) and keeps it for herself.
So, Claire (in her cranky, everything-bugs-me attitude) purses her lips, deepens her voice, gets a mean look on her face and says, "Why doesn't she take both caps off at the same time?"
I said, "She did."
"Oh...." she says.

All is going well. The doctor stopped by and gave Claire a pretty good report.
They are going to cut her antibiotics out of her IV and give them to her orally. If she can keep them down and keep her temps down, we can probably go home this afternoon.

claire.
We have a sick little girl.
Saturday night, Claire started running a fever and vomited throughout the night. She was running a fever of as high as 105.5.
We kept an eye on her, but her temps never went below 100.5. She pretty much ate nothing all day Sunday.
This morning (Monday), I called the doctor, and we took her in to be seen. She has a UTI (which she's had before), but she's also dehydrated and she can't keep her temps down.
So, we're in the hospital at least until morning. Blah.
Claire is extremely irritable (especially when her temps are high) and she can be downright insistent and cranky at times.
Honestly, it's almost amusing when she starts getting nasty because she's not typically like that.
The problem is that she doesn't like taking her medicine. We had to hold her down once already tonight. The good news is that she actually swallowed 4 pills (just like an adult) because she didn't want to chew them! She was mad about the whole thing (because she's cranky like that right now), but at least she did it! Yay.
She's also having problems with ketones that were in her urine sample. And she might have bacteria in her blood which would need to be treated with an antibiotic through an IV. We won't know about this until tomorrow or Wednesday.
I'll keep you posted when I know anything.
